Set of Four Qing Dynasty Elmwood Open Fretwork Panels with Delicate Carvings

About the Item

A set of four Chinese Qing Dynasty period large carved elm wood interior door panels from the late 19th century, with fretwork design, openwork and figures in landscape scenes carved in low relief. Created in China during the Qing Dynasty in the later years of the 19th century, each of this set of four of large architectural interior door panels captures our attention with its carefully organized arrangement of fretwork motifs topped by an arabesque of openwork foliage. The fretwork is carved with finesse in order to create typical Chinese square patterns that let the light pass through. The panels showcase delicate horizontal cartouches in their mid-section carved in low-relief with scenes depicting Chinese figures set inside a lovely landscape. The ensemble is completed by simple wooden panels at the bottom. In the back, these lower panels are strengthened by horizontal stretchers. Boasting a nice dark brown varnished patina, this set of four Qing Dynasty period Chinese interior door panels circa 1880 will make for a great decorative addition to any home! They could be placed close to a wall or used as a screen, keeping in mind that the Chinese considered screens as objects of contemplation and a source of spiritual and creative inspiration. They were used to protect from drafts, to provide a sense of privacy or to simply partition a room. The width mentioned is for the four pieces put together, each panel is approximately 21" W x 2"D x 89"H.
